VRS Finale Weekend - Boyd's & Cleveland
This weekend Doug Smith Motorsports will travel to Boyd's Speedway in Ringgold, GA and Cleveland Speedway in Cleveland, TN for the finale weekend of the Volunteer Racing Series season. At Boyd's the drivers will be competing for a $3,000 top prize while Cleveland will feature a unique format of three $1,000 to win feature events. We commited to running the series in May after missing the first few races but are currently tied for third place in VRS point standings thanks to a couple of strong results, most notably a 10th place finish at Bulls Gap on August 6th and an 11th place at Wartburg Speedway on May 28th.
Good Finish Spoiled at Richmond
Doug Smith Motorsports traveled to Richmond, KY to race at a track we are very familiar with, Richmond Raceway, for a $3,000 to win STARS VRS/MDRL co-sanctioned event. Doug started from the 20th starting spot but quickly found himself in the top fifteen after several opening lap accidents. After running as high as 11th during the feature he was forced to retire with mechanical trouble around the halfway point. We were credited with a 16th place finish, which puts us in a tie for third in Volunteer Racing Series points.

Racing Updates from Wartburg Speedway
Doug Smith Motorsports competed in it's first two events of the 2011 season over the last couple of weekends. The first night out Doug had trouble in qualifying but was able to avoid lots of carnage and race his way from the back of the field to finish 7th out of the 16 cars on hand. Last weekend didn't go as well but we still brought the car home in good shape with a 9th place finish. Doug plans to again compete at Wartburg this Saturday for the Tom Crass Memorial race.
New Look for our Warrior
Outlaw Graphics of Crossville, TN has lettered our car for the second year in a row. As always they did a fine job and we look forward to getting it out on the track soon. We plan on running the majority of the season in our older Warrior car in llm/steelheads at Wartburg, Crossville, and other area tracks. We do also plan on continuing to run our Rayburn from last season in a limited number of super late model events. Stay tuned for more details as the season moves along.
2011 Plans
After chasing points for the last couple of seasons in the super late model ranks, we've decided this season to focus more on racing local in the limited late model division. With weekly super late model racing virtually a thing of the past in East Tennesse and with the ever increasing travel costs associated with following a touring series, we've decided it would be in our best interest to race at some of the great tracks we have here around home. Expect to see Doug Smith Motorsports competing in the limited/steelhead late model classes at Wartburg Speedway, 411 Motor Speedway, Crossville Raceway, and Boyd's Speedway. While it seems like a step back, we will probably race more this season than ever before. We still plan to race in several of the big super late model events that take place in East Tennessee and Central Kentucky.
